I have had a cat and a hedgehog at the same time, and I would let them play together. Playing consisted of the following:
Hedgehog: Lalala, I am out and about, and looking for a place to burrow.
Cat: WTF!!!
Hedgehog: wuffle wuffle sniff sniff, minding my own business, eating spiders from under the cupboards...
Cat: I think I should be able to eat you. Or something...[attempts to whack hedgehog with paw, first swipe is deflect by flattened spines, which are pretty armor-like even when not puffed out]
Hedgehog: Oy! What are you doing!? Pfft! Pfft! [spikes puff out, eyebrow ridge covers eyes, wandering about continues...hedgehog resembles walking sea urchin]
Cat: Hmm...that's weird...I will try again...[whacks hedgehog, this time, spikes are out, so I imagine is is like trying to smack a cactus, but without the clingy bit]...Oh christ on crutches what the HELL!!
Cat then steps back and rests for a bit, watching the hog the whole time...hedgehog continues his promenade, mostly oblivious. After a couple of minutes, the whole thing repeats.
