Very well said and it summs up the way I was playing my investigator in CoC. sure I wanted to find out what was making the noises in the pit, but I wasn't going to make myself into lunch if it turned out to be hungry. So I got someone to tie a rope around me and lower me to the point where I could use my flashlight to make it visible.
Basically I believe our shared point is that PC's however curious they are still have the basic sense of self preservation.
